Buying a cheap Android TV box in India: what to check, and how the fake specs work
The budget Android TV box category is full of listings claiming 8 GB of RAM, 128 GB of storage and "16K" support. Some of those claims are exaggerations. Some are outright false and the box's own Settings screen will repeat them, because the firmware has been modified to do so. This guide gives you a short list to buy against and four tests to run in the first hour, while returning it is still easy.
Decide what the box has to do first
Most disappointment comes from buying tier-one hardware while holding tier-two expectations.
- Tier one: a player app and IPTV, nothing else. Modest hardware genuinely does this well.
- Tier two: the above, plus Netflix, Prime Video and JioHotstar in HD. This is where certification and DRM decide everything, and where cheap boxes fail invisibly.
- Tier three: plus games and emulation. That needs GPU performance and cooling this price band does not have, so it is a different purchase entirely.
The two specs that decide everything
Google Play certification
There is a real difference between a certified Android TV / Google TV device and an AOSP box with a TV-style launcher painted on. On an uncertified box, the major OTT apps may not install from the Play Store at all, may install and then refuse to play, or may work today and break at the next app update. Check it on the device: open the Play Store, go into its settings, and look for the Play Protect certification status. "Device is not certified" is a hard fact you should trust over any listing.
Widevine DRM level
This is the one almost nobody checks and almost everybody is affected by. Widevine L1 keeps the decryption in hardware and allows HD and above on the major streaming services. Widevine L3 does it in software, and the services respond by capping you at standard definition — permanently, regardless of your connection speed or the box's advertised 4K output. This is why a "4K box" can show a soft, blurry Netflix while YouTube looks sharp: YouTube does not use Widevine the same way.
No listing reliably tells you the level, and plenty state L1 falsely. Install the DRM Info app and read it off the device. If it says L3 and you are in tier two, that box is the wrong purchase and no setting will change it.
Reading a listing honestly
The pattern is consistent once you have seen it: implausible RAM and storage at an impossible price, "16K" support (there is no such format), a claimed Android version that the chipset inside never shipped with, and the same anonymous plastic shell sold under a dozen invented brand names with slightly different photographs.
Because modified firmware can misreport RAM, storage and Android version, the Settings screen is not proof either. Your real spec sheet is the first hour after delivery:
- Device info app (CPU-Z, AIDA64 or Device Info HW) to read the actual SoC model and the real RAM figure.
- Storage speed test (A1 SD Bench or similar). Fake capacity shows up as absurd write behaviour, and slow storage is what makes a box feel broken even when the specs look fine.
- DRM Info for the Widevine level.
- A 4K HEVC sample file played locally, watching for judder and for how hot the box gets after ten minutes.
Buy where returns are genuinely easy, because that hour is the only leverage you have.
Codecs that matter for live TV specifically
H.264 is the universal fallback and everything decodes it. HEVC (H.265), including 10-bit, is what a large share of FHD and 4K live streaming uses, and it must be decoded in hardware. When a weak CPU falls back to software decoding, you get the classic failure described in the buffering guide: audio perfectly smooth, video juddering. That symptom is regularly mistaken for a network problem.
AV1 mostly matters for YouTube and some OTT services, not for IPTV. If live TV is the job, do not pay a premium for AV1 support. Test HEVC 10-bit specifically, since HEVC 8-bit can pass while 10-bit stutters.
Ports, Wi-Fi, RAM, storage
- Ethernet: a 100 Mbit port is fine. A 10 Mbps stream uses a tenth of it. This is not where to spend extra money.
- Wi-Fi: dual-band is not optional. A 2.4 GHz-only box in a crowded building will fail every evening, and you will not be able to fix it.
- RAM: 2 GB is a realistic floor, 4 GB is comfortable once you have a player, an EPG cache and an OTT app coexisting.
- HDMI: 2.0 for 4K at 60 Hz. Check what your TV's port supports as well, before blaming the box for a black screen at 4K60. HDMI-CEC is worth having so one remote controls both.
- USB: one port, if you want recordings, a keyboard or a wired dongle.
The alternatives to a no-name box
- A certified streaming stick from a known brand. The spec sheet is less spectacular, but Play certification and the Widevine level are the two things that decide whether the OTT apps work, and on a mainstream stick you can establish both before you pay rather than in the return window.
- Your TV's own OS. Free, already there. The catch is that its app store may not carry the player you want, and sideloading on TV platforms is inconsistent.
- An old Android phone with a USB-C to HDMI adapter. Only works if that phone supports DisplayPort alt mode over USB-C — many mid-range phones do not, and no adapter fixes that.
- A cheap mini PC. No restrictions at all, at the cost of needing a mouse and being a computer.
If you were considering a portal-style set-top box
A MAG-style portal box is a different shape of product: one remote, one interface, no app management, nothing to update. For a parent's TV, or anywhere "it should just turn on and show channels" matters more than flexibility, that simplicity is a real advantage. What it costs you is everything else — one service, no OTT apps, no second player to fall back on when a channel misbehaves.
The thing to confirm before you buy that shape of box is whether your provider actually supports portal delivery, because not all do. Services differ here: Strong 8K, Neo 4K and Trex IPTV state MAG portal delivery on their sites, while others hand over Xtream Codes or M3U credentials only — so ask first, and buy hardware that speaks what you will actually be given.
First-hour setup checklist
- Set the output resolution and refresh rate to match the TV instead of leaving it on Auto, which is a common cause of flicker and dropped frames.
- Turn off the ambient screensaver and the home screen's video preview rows. They cost data and CPU for nothing.
- Install your player, enter your credentials, and test the decoder settings on a channel you watch often.
- Set DNS or a static IP if your network needs it.
- Pair the remote over Bluetooth if the box supports it, so you are not aiming at a box hidden behind the TV.
- Re-run the four tests from above before the return window closes.
One reassurance while you are testing: an Xtream Codes or M3U subscription is not tied to the hardware. It is a host, a username and a password — type them into the next box and everything comes back. A MAG portal box is the exception, because it is registered against its MAC address, so a replacement has to be re-registered by your provider. Either way, returning a bad box costs you the box, not the service.
