Streaming on a 4G or 5G hotspot: work out your data budget before it runs out
If your main internet is a phone hotspot or a 4G/5G dongle with a daily allowance, the data does not vanish mysteriously. It is spent at a rate you can calculate, and most of the shock comes from two things: not knowing what an hour of video actually costs, and not noticing what the devices spend while nobody is watching.
The one calculation the whole guide rests on
A stream at a given bitrate costs Mbps × 3600 ÷ 8 megabytes per hour. That simplifies to bitrate × 450.

Now find the bitrate you are actually pulling, because "HD" is a marketing word with no fixed value. Three ways, best first: your player's statistics overlay if it has one; the hotspot or CPE traffic counter, read before and after a measured ten minutes of watching, multiplied by six; or Android's per-app data usage screen after a session of a known length. Measure once for the content you watch most and you will not have to guess again.
Put your plan next to that table
A 2 GB daily allowance is roughly 90 minutes at 3 Mbps, or a little under an hour at 5 Mbps — and that is for the entire household, phones included. A 1.5 GB pack is about an hour at 3 Mbps. No setting changes that arithmetic, so plan around it.
Then find out what happens after the cap on your plan. Operators generally reduce the speed rather than cut you off, but the post-FUP speed differs by plan and is often too low for video to run at all. Check your operator's plan page or app for the exact figure — it is the difference between "the evening is over" and "we can still watch something small". If your plan includes a bonus data window or off-peak allowance, that is when to run app updates, downloads and backups. Not live TV.
Cut the bitrate before you cut the hours
Halving the bitrate doubles your watching time, and for a lot of content it costs you almost nothing visually. News, talk shows, most studio programming and anything you have on in the background do not need 5 Mbps on a 32-inch TV across the room. Sport does — that is where the detail actually lives.
In an Xtream-based IPTV app, the same channel usually appears more than once, in different quality groups labelled SD, HD and FHD. Those are separate streams at different bitrates. On the table above, moving off a high-bitrate FHD entry to the SD one takes you from 3.6 GB/h to 0.68 GB/h, with the HD entry in between at about 1.35 GB/h — without changing anything else about your setup. One Xtream account opens whichever quality groups your provider carries, so switching is a matter of which entry you press rather than anything to reconfigure.
On OTT apps, set a fixed quality rather than Auto. Auto assumes bandwidth is free and will climb to the highest bitrate your connection can carry, which on a good 5G signal is exactly the wrong behaviour. Most apps have a data-saver or quality setting per profile. While you are in there, turn off auto-play of the next episode and auto-playing trailers.
The data you spend while watching nothing
This is where a cap disappears before anyone sits down.
- Play Store auto-updates on the TV box. Set auto-update to off in the Play Store's own settings. Note that "update over Wi-Fi only" saves you nothing here — your hotspot is Wi-Fi as far as the box is concerned.
- The ambient screensaver, which downloads photographs continuously while the TV is idle. Turn it off or set it to a local image. It is under the device preferences / screen saver settings, though the exact path moves between Android TV and Google TV builds.
- Auto-playing preview rows on the home screen, which stream video trailers while you are just browsing. Disable video and audio previews in the home screen settings.
- Cloud photo backup on the phone acting as the hotspot. It considers itself on Wi-Fi and uploads everything.
- Video previews inside EPG grids in some player apps, which start a stream as you scroll past a channel.
After a day of normal use, open the per-app data usage screen on each device. Whatever is still spending data while nothing is playing will be on it.
Set a limit you cannot overshoot
- Mark the hotspot network as metered wherever the option exists. On Windows: Settings, Network & Internet, Wi-Fi, the network, Metered connection. Many Android TV builds offer a metered toggle on the network; if yours does not, rely on the phone-side limit below.
- On the phone providing the hotspot, set both a data warning and a hard limit (Android: Network & internet, then the SIM's data warning and limit). The hard limit is the one that actually stops the bleeding.
- If you use a 4G CPE or pocket router, set the monthly or daily quota in its admin page — most have one, and most people never open it.
- Check the operator app once a day for the first week. It is the quickest way to catch a setting you missed.
A better signal is a data saver
A weak cellular signal costs you throughput, and the player answers by re-fetching segments and switching quality mid-stream — those repeated fetches are what actually come out of your quota. Air-interface retries themselves are not billed; the operator meters IP traffic, not radio attempts. Placement is worth more than most settings. Put the hotspot high, near a window, on the side of the flat facing the tower, and away from the metal back panel of the TV. If low signal is the real problem, an external-antenna CPE or an outdoor antenna does more than any configuration change.
For the link between hotspot and box: 5 GHz when they are in the same room, 2.4 GHz when walls are in the way. And be aware that a strong 5G connection often costs more data per hour, not less, because the player happily climbs to a higher bitrate when it can. That is another argument for setting a fixed quality.

What this guide will not cover
Nothing here is about hiding tethering, faking a device type, or otherwise working around your operator's plan rules. If the plan does not fit the household, the fix is a bigger plan or a fixed line, not a trick.
The honest threshold
Two TVs, a child with a YouTube habit and 1080p live sport do not fit inside a daily-cap plan. Run the arithmetic: two hours of sport at 8 Mbps is 7.2 GB on its own. Three hours of casual viewing at 3 Mbps is another 4 GB. That is a household needing 10–12 GB on an ordinary evening, against a 2 GB pack. At that point the answer is a fixed line or fixed wireless rather than a bigger daily pack — work out the cost per GB of the plans actually available at your address and compare.
